'Ile Ijo' crooner, Mr May D, departs Square Records. But Why?

Published: by Mercy Duru Filed under: Naija Music Blog - 3,808 Views

It is still shocking to many Nigerian music lovers that Mr May D, the 'Ile Ijo' crooner, is no longer with Square Records, following the announcement by Jude 'Engees' Okoye, the manager behind the success of the duo singers P-Square.

Paul and Peter Okoye and May D.

Nigeria Music Network gathered that May D was signed to Square Records just some months ago and has released few hit tracks under the label including ‘Ile Ijo’, ‘Soundtrack’ that went viral, and the remix he did with Akon and P-Square 'Chop My Money'.

Below is the press statement released by Jude 'Engees' Okoye regarding the break-up:

"I, JUDE ‘ENGEES’ OKOYE of Square Records Limited and Northside Entertainment Limited hereby announces to the general public that Mr. Akinmayokun Awodumila, otherwise known as MAY D is no longer an artiste under the aforementioned outfits due to irreconcilable differences.

We at Northside and Square records wish him all the best in his career and life.

Yours Faithfully Signed: Jude 'Engees' Okoye, CEO, Northside Ent. Ltd/Square Records"

However, information gathered on the web reportedly says May D is not aware of his being booted out of Square Records.

According to the 'Ile Ijo' crooner, he woke up to hear that he is no more officially with the label.

No one really knows the relation between Paul and Peter Okoye and Mr. May D, but that Akinmayokun Awodumila is the first signed recording artist to the Square Records label. Ever since the signing of May D, fans have grown to love the Afropop singer and his swaggerific dance moves displayed in the 'Ile Ijo music video.

The breaking news about May D departing Square records, came days after the Okoye's buried their late mother, Mrs. Okoye on the 2nd of August 2012.

According to Jude 'Engees Okoye, the CEO of Square Records/Northside Entertainment, the reason for dropping May D from the record label is due to "irreconcilable differences".

Further more, to investigate the depth of the situation, Nigeria Music Network observed that May D's YouTube Channel (OfficialMayD) has been closed down and all music videos disabled on the platform. See for yourself by visiting

May D, who was initially scheduled to perform at the LoveAfroBeats festival in London alongside P-Square and Wande Coal, was missing in action.

What is the reason behind the split?

According to information gathered from NotJustOk, May D never signed an official contract with Square Records. They only had a verbal agreement. So, when it was time to sign the contract, May D made some demands that Square Records were not willing to meet. For this reason, their relationship dissolved.

What sort of demands did you think May D was asking for? A mansion? A Bentley? 100 million Naira in cash? It's kinda sketchy and hard to pinpoint at the moment, but we hope they settle their "irreconcilable differences" and go back to making good Naija music.

What are fellow Nigerians saying about the split?

Nigeria Music Network observed few interesting, yet controversial comments posted on several Naija blogs and musical sites. Below are what some have said regarding May D and P-Square parting ways:

Kofoworola Kadebian Adebiyi: They probably had artistic differences about what May D's brand should be. Might not have been personal. And honestly I think May D will be fine. He's got talent and should know the industry by now. Wish him all the best. Can't wait to see how he blossoms.

BONARIO NNAGS: Knew it will happen someday,Square records is all about the twins and the twins alone. May D never blended with their style, and he was as unnoticed as d Linesman. Wishing him d best sha.~BONARIO~.

Jessica Okojie: always cum as "irreconcilable" differences....square records is obviously a family business tin....

Warri Girl: I wish MayD a sucess in his career, now we are going to see if he is realy talented without square records.

Make-Up by Teju: This seems like they Fired him wao...I believe the guy will do well, coz he's @ least Original....compared to them them.

MNC_Critic: When davido didnt sign a contract with a company that bought him a car n gave him an apartment at 1004, he was praised for it. May D's case should not be different. if they can't meet his terms, fine, he can do well on his own. i'm pretty sure they'll pay him off plus he can perform his HITS on his own meaning more money for HIM ALONE. its business, it should be nothing personal. he should even be happy that square records did not do to him what some record labels do, holding him on d same spot and sucking him dry, cos that would have been terrible.

Lets wish him d best cos he got a lot of potential.

Shanaboi: CONGRATULATIONS MAY 'D... First of all why did they wait this long in getting you signed, Doubting Thomas?. Now d boy's finally feeling his worth, na now dem know say dem go sign am mscheewwww.

Secondly, Square records should stop this their pending life style of self centeredness. They went far on May'd though, still I detest their reputation ever since d prime of the track Do Me with WAJE being d best song Ever from Psquare. Ask how much they paid her or why she never appeared on the video. SHARING GLORY HAS BEING SO IMPOSSIBLE FOR DIS GUYZ 'Simple', and for loosing MAY'D, i believe you guys have long way to go in running artist.

Do you think May D should settle the matter and go back to Square Records?
